staff report
Children Inc., the Covington-based agency dedicated to improving the
lives of young Northern Kentuckians, will get a voice at the table of
the Prichard Committee's spring meeting Wednesday in Lexington.
The
topic, an increasingly discussed one in Kentucky education circles:
making quality preschool available for more Kentucky children.
The
meeting of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence will be from
12:30 to 5 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency.
Rick Hulefeld, executive director of Children Inc., will be one of the
three presenters.
"Prichard is interested in pushing forward the idea of universal pre-K
for half-a-day," Hulefeld explained.
"They've asked me to talk about the concerns of existing coordination of
public pre-schools and community early-childhood organizations like
mine."
Hulefeld will advocate for raising the standards for licensing such
agencies in Kentucky and increasing the focus on parental involvement.
"From my perspective," Hulefeld said, "what does Kentucky need to do for
kids to arrive at school ready to be successful."
On
Friday, the Prichard Committee and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce are
sponsoring an education forum with the state's gubernatorial candidates.
The forum will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lexington Center.
