Service Learning Training

Children Inc supports the Mayerson Northern Kentucky Service Learning Initiative. The program offers a variety of trainings related to service learning best practices for teachers and students. Our team is available to provide the following trainings individually or as a combination of trainings at your school.

Introduction to Service Learning (1.5 hrs): This overview of service learning answers the questions What is service learning? Why do service learning? How do we implement service learning? What support services are available to help carry out projects? Sample project examples bring the learning home and encourage creativity.

Community Service to Service Learning (1 hour): A one hour training that emphasizes structure (PARD model) and substance (8Effective Practices). Teachers review video vignettes of service learning projects, evaluate which of the 8 Effective practices are/are not present. Activities and discussion guide participants to be mindful of the difference between community service and service learning and to plan high quality service learning projects.

Reflection & Evaluation (1 hour): Participants focus upon Reflection within the service learning experience to assess learning, evaluate progress, check perceptions and encourage personal/interpersonal growth. Reflective activities and ideas highlight the vital and continuous process of learning throughout a project. Examples are shared within the training to increase reflection tools that incorporate critical thinking, multiple intelligences, and varied purposes.

Social Entrepreneurship  and Service Learning (1 hour): This training demonstrates how service learning combined with social entrepreneurship teaches children financial literacy and civic engagement. The workshop shares local and international organizations and sample projects that can translate into a high impact service learning experience for youth.
